About Sifu David McKenzie

Sifu David McKenzie began his martial arts journey at the age of 12, initially training in Judo for a short period before going on to train in Tae Kwon Do.

In 1982, Sifu David began training in Wing Chun at the Wing Chun Martial Art Academy alongside his brother, Grand Master Garry McKenzie, also known as Abdul Malik. Since then, the majority of Sifu David’s Wing Chun training and development has been under the guidance and teaching of his brother, Sifu Garry.

In 1990, Grand Master Garry McKenzie opened The Wing Chun School headquarters. The following year, Sifu David opened the first branch of The Wing Chun School in Leyton, London. Several years later, he went on to open another Wing Chun school in the South Woodford, Essex area. In 2007, Sifu David relocated his school from South Woodford to the Chingford area, where Functional Wing Chun is currently based.

Sifu David is the most senior instructor within Grand Master Garry McKenzie’s The Wing Chun School organisation. He has been authorised to teach Wing Chun since 1991 and is one of the few instructors within the organisation to have successfully passed the Advance Level.

Over the years, Sifu David has travelled with Grand Master Garry McKenzie and other instructors to Hong Kong and Foshan, China, to meet and exchange knowledge with other Wing Chun practitioners. During these visits, he had the opportunity to meet many respected figures within the Wing Chun community, including Grandmasters Ip Chun and Ip Ching, as well as Wan Kam Leung, Tsui Seung Tin, Patrick Leung and Donald Mak, amongst numerous other Sifus.

During his time in Hong Kong, as well as in the UK, Sifu David has taken part in Wing Chun seminars and demonstrations, demonstrating the art alongside his brother, Grand Master Garry McKenzie.
